There are many reasons to love Lodi wineries. First of all there are many outstanding wines being produced in Lodi. The wines are reasonably priced. The area has a charming rural atmospshere with many wineries located not far from one another. Most wineries are small, family owned establishments where regulars get to know the owners.
Located in a rural area east of San Francisco by the Sacramento River Delta, Lodi is characterized by its warm dry summer days, cool breezy nights, and sandy soils.
These conditions make this section of the California Wine regions a prime grape growing area.
There are plenty of wineries to choose from in Lodi. At last count there were were than 80 wineries, but not all of them have tasting rooms. Most Lodi wineries have started charging a small fee for wine tasting, but they will usually reimburse the tasting fee if you purchase a bottle.
While wine tasting in this area, you may notice the abundance of Old Vine Zinfandel. Lodi is fortunate to have many old Zinfandel vineyards, which are at least 50 years old. Old vines have fewer and smaller grapes that produce more intense flavors, color, and sugar. The wines are full bodied and more complex than younger vines.
