Why We Love Lodi Wineries

Lodi, California There are many reasons to love Lodi wineries. First of all there are many outstanding wines being produced in Lodi. The wines are reasonably priced. The area has a charming rural atmospshere with many wineries located not far from one another. Most wineries are small, family owned establishments where regulars get to know the owners.

LodiVineyardLocated in a rural area east of San Francisco by the Sacramento River Delta, Lodi is characterized by its warm dry summer days, cool breezy nights, and sandy soils.
These conditions make this section of the California Wine regions a prime grape growing area.

*Interesting Fact – 18% of California’s wine grapes come from this region. This is more than Napa and Sonoma combined.

Lodi Wineries
There are plenty of wineries to choose from in Lodi. At last count there were were than 80 wineries, but not all of them have tasting rooms. Most Lodi wineries have started charging a small fee for wine tasting, but they will usually reimburse the tasting fee if you purchase a bottle.
While wine tasting in this area, you may notice the abundance of Old Vine Zinfandel. Lodi is fortunate to have many old Zinfandel vineyards, which are at least 50 years old. Old vines have fewer and smaller grapes that produce more intense flavors, color, and sugar. The wines are full bodied and more complex than younger vines.

Pietro’s Italian Restaurant – The Place to Go in Lodi

Pietro's Italian Restaurant Pietro’s Italian Restaurant is the place to go for lunch or dinner in Lodi. They feature fresh locally produced Italian cuisine in a relaxing atmosphere. Owners Jim and Annette Murdaca circulate throughout the restaurant greeting guests and creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Pietro's Restaurant Garden
Many of the ingredients they use come from the gardens outside the restaurant. It’s fun to browse the raised beds to see eggplant, basil, zucchini, tomatoes, lemons, and other vegetables growing.

My wife and I have eaten at Pietro’s Italian Restaurant numerous times. We have never been disappointed. Favorites include their signature dish, Nettie’s Homemade Ravioli with meat sauce. The Veal Scaloppini is deliciously sauteed with mushrooms, fresh marinara sauce, and wine.

Chicken Picatta - Pietros
My wife’s “go-to” dish is the Penne al Pietro, which is prawns, sun-dried tomatoes, mushrooms, and broccoli sauteed in garlic. We both love the Chicken Picata. This dish is sauteed chicken with garlic and capers in a lemon wine sauce. There’s so many incredible choices!

The New York Steak Sandwich is the thickest, largest, most flavorful steak sandwich I’ve ever had. My mouth is watering just thinking about it! Everything is accompanied with incredible buttery ciabatta bread. Save room for dessert so you can enjoy the Cannoli. This is an Italian style crepe filled with fresh hand-packed ricotta cheese, chocolate chips, and pistachios. End the meal with an after-dinner drink.

Patio at Pietro's Trattoria
Dine outside on the patio if the weather permits. It’s very cozy and relaxing sitting outside surrounded by gardens. Pierto’s is a popular restaurant for both locals and tourists. An increasing number of people visit Lodi to go wine tasting at the many Lodi wineries nearby. Reservations are recommended; especially on the weekends.

Is Lodi California’s Next Big Wine Region?

Lodi, California
Consumers have learned that Lodi is the place to go for quality wines at reasonable prices. The media has caught on. Wine Enthusiast announced in November that Lodi has been chosen as the 2015 “Wine Region of the Year”.

Lodi’s Wine History

Lodi Vineyard and OakHistorically, Lodi focused on growing Tokay grapes. These grapes were sold as table grapes, distilled into brandy, or fortified to make Port and Sherry-styled wines. By the 1990s most vineyards had converted to growing premium varietal winegrapes. This region became an official American Viticultural (AVA) in 1986.

This area has grown from just eight wineries in the early 1990s to almost 100 wineries today. Approximate 100,000 acres are planted with winegrapes. Most of these grapes go into large-scale wines. However, an increasing number of small family owned wineries are producing small lots of handcrafted wines.

Lodi Wines

D'Art Wine Label - Lodi Winery
A large variety of wines grow in this area, which is characterized by warm summer days and cool evenings. Both the Mokelumne and Cosumnes Rivers flow through this appellation; enriching the soil with granitic-based minerals that lend complex flavors to the wines.

Two-thirds of the wine grapes grown in the area are red. 40 percent of California’s Zinfandel is produced in here. Some of the Zinfandel vineyards date back to 1888. Spanish, Italian, Portugese, German, and Rhone grapes are all grown in the Lodi Wine Country.

Local winemakers are increasingly devoted to producing quality wines. They are experimenting with new ideas, different grapes, and new techniques. Their creative attitude continues to transform this region into an area known for producing world-class wines.
