California breweries are located throughout the state. There are more breweries in California than any other state.
More than 22,000 Californians are employed by breweries. The overwhelming majority of breweries in the state are craft breweries. These are independently owned establishments with small productions that focus on quality.

- 1980 – Ken Grossman started the highly acclaimed Sierra Nevada Brewing Company in Chico.
- 1983 – Mendocino Brewing opened the first brewpub in the state at Hopland.
