Most visitors to the park will walk the Yawkey Trail. This quarter mile trail circles around the top of Mount Helix. Benches are provided for you to sit and enjoy the spectacular scenery. You can also park in either of the two parking lots at the corner of Mt. Helix Drive and Vivera Drive and walk to the top. There is a parking lot at the top of Mount Helix Park as well.
Each year a Kid’s Art Camp is held in the park. Various lectures series are presented that focus on environmental topics. Yoga classes are held from 9 AM to 10:15 AM on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Mount Helix Park is a popular venue for weddings. The Park is available to rent for weddings, memorials, religious ceremonies/services and by non-profit organizations.
Easter Sunrise Services are held each Easter in the outdoor amphitheater. A Christmas Caroling event takes place each December. The best time to view the night sky from the top of Mount Helix is at an Astronomy Night. High resolution telescopes are provided by the San Diego Astronomy Association. They have volunteers on hand to answer your questions about the cosmos.
Dogs are allowed in the park on leashes. You’ll even find a doggy drinking fountain at the picnic area near the amphitheater. BBQs, smoking, alcohol, glass containers, and open flames are not allowed in the park.
The Mt. Helix Park Foundation is the non-profit organization responsible for preserving and enhancing the Park, amphitheater and cross memorial on top of this local mountain. They do a wonderful job of maintaining this park with no government funding.
Volunteers are what makes this park a success. They hold work days, raise funds, and organize the many activities. Information on volunteering or other questions about Mount Helix Park are available on their website.
