Wine grapes were first planted in San Benito County during the 1850’s by a French immigrant named Theophile Vache’. Using vine clippings he brought from France, he planted his new vineyards in the beautiful hills of the Cienega Valley.

Calera Winery was established in 1975. They produce Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Viognier. Their Late Harvest Viognier is excellent as well. The tasting room is located on the top of a mountain. You can picnic outside and enjoy panoramic views of the hills below.

Casa De Fruta is a popular stop for travelers driving the Pacheco Pass Highway. There’s an RV park, motel, and restaurant. Kids love the carousel and train ride. Many non-wine drinkers enjoy their fruit wines.

This family owned San Benito County winery was established in 1988. Some of the oldest vines in the state are located on this property. The winery sits directly above the San Andreas Fault. It is one of the few wineries to have a major fault line dissecting its main building. More than 25 antique cars are on display in the old fermentation room. DeRose produces award winning Zinfandel, Negrette, Cabernet Franc, and Viognier. As you visit San Benito County Wineries, be sure to stop at DeRose.

Enz Winery was founded in 1972 on a 1,500 acre ranch. Some of the vines were first planted in 1895. Sample wines and enjoy a picnic surrounded by the lush vineyards. Wines include Zinfandel, St. George, and Mourvedre. They have a wine called Wild Zin. This is similar to White Zinfandel but dryer and heartier.
