El Dorado County Wineries

El Dorado County wineriesEl Dorado County Wineries produce many award winning wines. If you are thinking of planning a California Wine Tour, this mountain area is a wonderful getaway. Characterized by warm days and cool nights with pleasant breezes from the valley below, this is the perfect wine growing location. It is the ideal place for growing grapes with intense flavor full of character and vibrancy.

You’ll love the spectacular views of the Sierra Nevada mountains. The wineries are scattered around the county but you will find that most of the El Dorado County Wineries are located near the historic towns of Placerville and Fairplay. It’s a rural area with uncrowded scenic roads.

Hangman's Tree

The largest town in the area is Placerville. This historic town was the center of gold mining activities during the California Gold Rush. Miners would head here to buy supplies, seek transportation, sell gold, enjoy lodging and banking. During that time the town was known as “Hangtown” because of the large number of men being hung here.

Hangman’s Tree has since been cut down, but you’ll find a plaque noting the historic spot. Take a stroll through the town to see a number of historic buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. You can also visit Thomas Kinkade’s original gallery on Main Street in downtown Placerville. Thomas Kinkade grew up in Placerville.Hi
