









This sloppy joe recipe proves that sloppy joes are NOT just for kids. It’s true sloppy joes are a little messy, but these are also quite yummy!
This recipe makes four gourmet sloppy joes. Double the recipe to serve more. I like to serve these sloppy joes with a fresh green salad and buttered corn-on-the-cob. They quickly will become a family favorite.
My husband considers sloppy joes old-fashioned comfort food a treat. My children love them, also. Even better, it’s a quick and easy meal.
Wine Pairing: Drink a nice drier style Zinfandel with these sloppy joes. Find a Zinfandel that you like that fits your budget. This bold, full bodied wine will be the perfect wine to drink with this hearty dish. Some suggestions include 7 Deadly Zins from Michael David, Mischevious from Machia, and Sierra Foothills Zin from Renwood.
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 small red onion, chopped
1 pound low fat ground hamburger
1 cup ketchup
1/8 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
salt and pepper, to taste
1/4 cup Zinfandel
4 large hamburger buns
Instructions for this sloppy joe:
1. Heat the oil in a large frying pan. Saute chopped onion in the oil until soft and translucent.
2. Add hamburger meat to pan and cook for until lightly brown. Stir well to break the meat into small pieces.
3. Discard fat.
4. Add ketchup, chili powder, garlic, pepper flakes, salt, pepper, and wine. Slowly simmer this mixture for 20 minutes.
5. Toast the buns in the oven for a nice crunchy bun. Spoon hamburger mixture onto the buns. Cheers!
